Joe Cetrone Response to setting Of Mice and Men Along with the market crash of 1929, the United States underwent an economic calamity. Millions out of work, families destroyed and dreams crushed. Not only this, a solution to this disaster was nowhere in sight. Human existence was in question. And inevitably, the American Dream. With so many out of work, how would it have been possible for people to protect and serve their families? There was not enough money to go around, making it near impossible for citizens of this once great land to find hope. The clichà © American home with a white picket fence and a dog running around the yard was nothing short of a miracle. The award winning author, John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men and it was published in 1937. This tells the story of two middle aged, unemployed and poverty stricken men trying to keep their heads above water in Depression-era California. They face many challenges along the way and cross paths with some very interesting people. With all of this said, The American Dream as we know it, is unattainable. As if finding a job was hard enough at the time, the Depression certainly made it harder. It has been said that Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men as a way to convey his own emotions.
